Biography
Sonja was born in Calgary and grew up on a farm near Strathmore. Sonja’s interest in drawing and painting began early, while she was in High School. She later refined her skills by taking formal training at U of C in Fine Arts and then later at Alberta College of Art.
Although not a professional artist until she retired from her career as an administrator, Sonja has painted and worked in a variety of other media throughout her life. In recent years she has resumed a career in art and painting and has become involved in painting groups and is expanding her horizons by taking classes with various artists.
Initially her medium of choice was oil, she has since broadened her skills to include, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media.
Sonja has always been an artist with a strong “need to create” driving her to attain new levels of perfection, always in an artistic endeavor, throughout her life. Sonja is inspired, by her Alberta Heritage and many of her works of prairie and mountain landscapes, and flowers, reflect this heritage.
Having traveled extensively throughout the years, Sonja is inspired by architecture, people and their landscapes. Hawaii and the South Pacific are a favorite subject with all the beauty and color of the landscape, while Southern California’s Desert regions present a sharp contrast in landscape. Sonja spends time in the Desert regions of California each year and has become involved in the Art Community as a member of a group who present a Show and Sale each March. Europe and the Old World Architecture offer an entirely different challenge. Through past and present experiences she plans to develop a series of paintings concentrating on the Mediterranean area.
Being a part of painting groups and continually taking classes provide the valued opportunity of further expansion of her skills and repertoire through critiques, observations, and advice of other artists.
Sonja belongs to the Palm Desert Greens Art Group in Palm Desert, Ca. and is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Artist Statement
As a child growing up on a prairie farm I was always in awe of the world's landscape around me. The colors, light and dark, the textures, and the shapes and forms. While travelling to many places I have become aware of how different these landscapes can be. It is this awareness that inspires me to attempt to capture what I see, in my Art Form, and hope to create paintings that bring pleasure to my viewers. While I tend to be a realist, I have aspirations to go in other directions also, and to stretch the visions I have into more imaginative form. Art is everywhere, everything I see is digested and related to something that I can create.
